 54 I urning the corner into Union street, Drury academy stands out conspicuously on the hill to the right. Be- low it is the shoe shop of N. L. Millard. To the left, beyond the first bridge which is crossed, are the brick buildings of the Freeman manufacturing company. Beyond the second bridge, to the left, is the low wooden structure, now utilized as a grocery store, where Professor Mowbray made many of his experi- ments with nitro-glycerine, electricity and smokeless powder. Io the right, a little beyond, is the Union school. Further on, to the right, is a cozy, comfort- able-looking frame house, the home of the late Pro- fessor Mowbray. A few steps further on, to the left, is the Eclipse mill, operated by the Arnold print-works company. Then comes the Glen. North of the Glen is the Beaver and the Beaver mill, also operated by the Arnold print-works com- pany, Tradition says that many years ago a hunter by the name of Henry Hudson was one day chasing' a deer down the steep hill-sides to the north of the village. He was successful in his chase, and after securing the game he grasped it by the hind legs and started for home, dragging the animal after him.
