however, the London County
Council agreed that this very
reasonable fear should not
any longer deter them from
deciding how the Metropolitan
street-car system could be
improved. After a painstaking
investigation by the Council’s
representatives of what had
been done, and was being done,

in Europe and America, it was resolved to
follow the example of New York, and have
the London tramway system reconstructed
on the “ conduit ” electric principle. The
revolution will be effected very gradually.
But within the next few years the old style
shall have completely given way to the new ;
and the horseless carriage will be the popular
mode of street locomotion throughout the
