I.
When the Governors of this College honoured me with a request to
deliver the inaugural lecture on the occasion of the opening of the
new department, I thought I could not do better than take for my
subject some of the experiences and results I have gained while
working in the domains of technical mycology.
The principal contents and the methods employed in this branch
of science are derived from fermentation - physiology and general
mycology, the last term being understood as including not only the
study of fungi, in the commonly accepted signification, but also that
