Gärungsgewerbe, in Berlin, but hø has also been present at some
lectures and experiments there. It is to his initiative that the
technical high schools in Germany have been put on a level with
the universities, in so far as they have been given the privilege of
granting the “ Doctor ” degrees. He has raised the standard of these
schools and of the principle connected with their establishment, and at
the present time many talented youths, who formerly entered upon
other walks of life, are likely to resort to these institutions. We who
live in the surrounding countries shall feel a keener competition, but
that will goad us on to new exertions, each in his own way and with
his own means.
The experiment which the Heriot Watt College has already made
with one branch of technical mycology has within a short time borne
good fruits. I am sure that this also will be the case in the new
enlarged department, where technical mycology will be admitted in its
entirety. The young, desirous of taking up these walks of life, will
then have no need of going abroad. You have started on the path of
progress, and with all my heart I wish you every success, and desire to
express my best wishes for the new department.
