A FINAL NOTE In writing this volume with the aim of elimi- nating waste, we realise that progress in general waste elimination is always retarded by the feel- ing that it is for others rather than ourselves. In order that we might practise what we preach, we requested that this book be printed in accordance with the forms of spelling recommended by the Simplified Spelling Board, New York City. The publishers ruled otherwise, and to change the spelling now would cause delay. New conditions confront the world to-day. These new conditions demand as never before that savings be made whenever possible. Simpler Spelling requires less time to learn, saves mo- tions of writing, typing, setting type and eye swing in reading. It saves ink, pencils, paper, and consequently helps save forests. The sav- ing of forests in turn eliminates floods. The elimination of floods saves the priceless fertile soil from being eroded and washed to the seas, there to be lost forever.
