226 ENGINEERING WONDERS OF THE WORLD.
to-day—with great possibilities still awaiting
it—will enable the reader to appreciate the
importance of Mr. Thwaite’s discovery. That
famous laboratory test of his has had results
which have affected the welfare of a great
number of people, and can be valued properly
only by the expert. Large fortunes have
been realized by the builders of blast-furnace
gas engines. It is sad to think that, like many
another inventor before him, Thwaite, the ul-
timate cause of these fortunes, should have
reaped no material advantage for himself, but
only the plentiful worry and disappointment
which doubtless hastened his premature death.

(Referred to indicated horse-power.)
The heavy lines indicate the proportionate efficiency in horse-power of
various types of engines using the same amount of heat energy.
