OUR ROADWAYS.
On granite, 132 miles,
On asphalte, 191 miles, and
On wood, 446 miles.”
The falls, moreover, on both granite and asphalte,
were of a more serious character than those that
occurred on wood. He thus concludes his report:
“ Of these accidents, which are most obstructive to
“ the traffic as well as most injurious to the horses,
“ asphalte had the greatest proportion, granite the
“ next, and wood the least.”
It should also be stated that the figures in this re-
port include accidents on the Ligno-Mineral Paving,
which were proportionally much more numerous
than those on any other kind of Wood Paving. So
that the safety of the Wood Paving recommended is
in fact even greater than it appears from the report.
The next point, and one which is closely connected
with that of safety, is cleanliness, and in this respect
wood is found to stand next to asphalte, which is
the most cleanly of all pavements. The engineer
of one of our principal cities found that at one
cleansing the quantity of slop removed from 1000
yards of Macadam was four loads, from 1000 yards
of Granite nearly two loads, and from Wood one-third
of a load. When we recollect that mud and dust
mean annoyance and discomfort and more or less
obstruction to traffic, we have in these figures a
powerful argument for the employment of wood
