Unfortunately, it is a very difficult pump to describe, and the reader who desires to understand how the admission and release of steam is controlled will have to follow the ac- companying diagrams very closely. The whole pump, except the steam chest, is shown in section in Fig. 161. Fig. 162 shows the ports c, h, and d by which steam enters or leaves the cylinder. Fig. 163 shows a hori- zontal section, and Fig. 164 a vertical section through the valves of which there are two. Referring to Figs. 163 and 164, A is the main valve, which is operated by steam and the pur- pose of which is to dis- tribute steam to the
