As the engine became better known the inventor
vanished. You would have thought that a man
who had conferred such benefits upon his genera-
tion would have been at least famous, and probably
wealthy. Fame perhaps he had, but it was known
to but a few people of his own day ; and wealth he
had not, or his later life and end would not have
remained unrecorded. No one knows how, when,
or where he died ; and this fact renders it probable
that he ended life poor and friendless, leaving others
to grow richer as a result of his labours.
