In such cases as London Glasgow Swansea Paris Mannheim Ebcrbach Dordrect Boston and so on, all one has to do is to decide exactly where the columns are to commence, place the stops there, and after writing the first word, press the plunger to the left, and the next moment the carriage is in a position to commence the seconcl’word, without recourse to the space-bar. But in executing irregular columns, as of money and so on, the columns do not always commence at the same place. The unit is therefore taken as on the right hand side, and each succeeding plunger, after the first, stops the carriage one space before that at which the stop is fixed. Thus, For i, we touch the first plunger. ,, ii, we touch the second plunger. ,, in, we touch the third plunger, and so on. It will, however, be clear that where the carriage moves over a number of spaces, the jar and shock must be very
