—291— This illustration shows the type-bar of the Kanzler machine (see page 232). The four types are mounted on the front of the bar, very similarly to those of the Empire or Ford, and the depression of the key first causes the typeblock end of the bar to rise to the proper level, according to the character required, and then drives the bar home to the platen. In many respects, the action is like that of a typewheel machine. The impression formed on our mind was that, when thoroughly learned, the machine could be operated at considerable speed, but we saw nothing in the machine to justify its somewhat heavy price.
