Northern Rhodesia includes the territories north of the Zambesi and south of Lake Tanganyika, which lie between Portuguese, Congo Free State, and German East Africa. Southern Rhodesia includes Mashonaland and Matabeleland, which lie to the north of the Transvaal Colony. In 1855 Dr. Livingstone discovered the Victoria Falls on the Zambesi River. In 1888 Lobengula, King of the Matabele, entered into a treaty of peace with the British Government, and later granted mineral rights in Mashonaland to Messrs. Rudd, Maguire, and Thompson, acting on behalf of Mr. Rhodes ; and, in 18s9, the British South Africa Company was granted a Royal Charter entrusting it with the development of the extensive regions lying to the south of the Zambesi, and then known as Mashonaland, and the Pioneer Expedition took possession in 1890. Owing to the murderous raids of the Matabele their capital at Bulawayo was occupied by the Company’s forces on the 4th Nov., 1893, and in January, 1894, Matabeleland came under the civil government of the Company. In 1896 the Matabele and Mashonas broke into rebellion, and, after a long struggle, order was established. The railway from Cape Town to Bulawayo was opened on the 4th Nov., 1897, while the line from the port of Beira to Salisbury was opened on the 1st May, 1899. Further lines of railway are now under construction, i.e., Bulawayo to Gwelo and Salisbury; Bulawayo to Gwanda; and Bulawayo to Victoria Falls. These lines, and others under consideration, will connect the gold mines with the coal areas, tap valuable timber districts, and open up for settlement extensive tracts of country. Rhodesia has been proved to be very rich in mineral resources, especially gold, copper, iron, and coal, which are found in many parts of the country. GOLD MINING. Very extensive Coal Fields are in the Valleys of the Zambesi. In 1902-3 these immense Coal areaswill be connected with the Gold Fields by a Railway now under construction, the supply of Coal considerably reducing the expenses of working the Gold Mines. The Coul from Wankie’s District is of proved good quality, and adapted for steam purposes. Coal is also found in large areas at Tuli, which are now being tapped by a Railway far advanced in construction, also in Mafttngabusi, also to be tappad by another Railway now under construction ; and in Sebungwo, and also west of Victoria, and in other localities of Rhodesia.
