THE PRELIMINARY PURIFICATION OF CO AL GAS 519
is composed of a perforated rim, whilst depending from the bottom are four bent tubes, the sides of which. are also perforated. As the shaft re-volves the liquid is forced up the bent tubes into the trays, whence it is flurtg by centrifugal force across the gas space, rebounding again from the outer walls of the cylinder, and once more coming in contact with. the gas. The gas is admitted into the lowest washing chamber, passes through the spray to the central opening in the bottom of the s e c o n d chamber, thence through the second spray, and so on. into the third and subsequent cham-bers. The washing medium is admitted at the top of the vessel, flows through, the centre openings from chamber to chamber, and is finally run off at the bottom. In an eight-chamber machine clean water admitted at the top will be discharged as 16 oz. liquor, and—if so desired—the last traces of ammonia may be remo ved. This washer is equally suitable for the ex-traction of cyanogen from the gas. When used for this purpose the sprayers are made entirely of cast iron. For napli tb alene removal the machine is constructed of from 2 to 6 chambers, but one machine may be used for both
