THE GARDEN UNDER GLASS
of the wall would be 3 feet and at intervals of 10 feet it would be provided witli wooden shutters to admit air below the staging and over the hot-water pipes. The wall should be whitewashed on the inside. Standing on the outer edge of this wall should be 2 feet of wood and glass, the wood forming the framework for ventilators which would run the whole length of the house and would all open at tlie same time on the same side. The gearing would be worked by a lever permitting the light to stand
fully open or to be regulated so as to give but the merest chink of air. From this glasswork would spring the roof, and on each spån at the apex ventilators about eighteen inches deep would open the whole length of the house, being operated by levers in a similar manner to those at the side. The sashes and woodwork of both roof and sides should be as siender as is consistent with rigidity ; for the füllest possible amount of light will at times be needed, and whenever it is too strong it can be subdued by sliading.
