MOTION STUDY AND TIME STUDY IN-
STRUMENTS OF PRECISION 1
The greatest waste in the world comes from
needless, ill-directed, and ineffective motions.
These motions are unnecessary and preventable.
Their existence in the past was excusable, be-
cause there was no knowledge of how to dispense
with them. That excuse no longer obtains. The
methods and devices of waste elimination are
known and are being constantly used. But the
knowledge of how to make these great world-
wide economies is being disseminated at an as-
tonishingly slow pace.
This paper is for the purpose of disseminating
such knowledge, particularly as to the devices
that are used for making the measurements that
enable us to eliminate waste.
In the science of management, as in all other
sciences, progress that is to be definite and last-
ing depends upon the accuracy of the measure-
