THE CONVERSION OF THE GAUGE
OF THE GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY
MAIN LINE.
A BROAD GAUGE EXPRESS.
BY FELIX J. C. POLE.
A Notable Incident in the
History of Railway Engineering.
“ T T is proposed to convert the whole of
I the main line and branches west of
Exeter from broad to narrow gauge in
the month of May 1892, when it is intended
that the alteration shall be carried out between
a Friday night and the following Monday, the
running of broad gauge vehicles on the line
between Paddington and Exeter being there-
upon discontinued.”
So ran the official announcement by the
Great Western Railway that the entire aboli-
tion of the broad gauge had been decided upon,
and that the work of conversion was to be
undertaken with such expedition as to create
for all time an engineering feat of the first
magnitude—not on account of the difficult
character of the work in itself, but from the
perfection of engineering and railway organiza-
tion necessary to accomplish it in the time
allotted.
