so far as we know, do not occur in Nature at all. We
must, however, beware of pride. We must confess that,
although we can produce organic compounds in the
laboratory, we cannot turn out an organism. That
is a different thing altogether, and there is no prospect
that the breath of life will ever be evolved from any
chemical mixture, however cunningly devised.
