76 VAPORIZING OF PARAFFIN. upertures a. Contrary to the method adopted in the vaporizer just described, the vapour and air in this case •are drawn up outside a tubular chamber v, through the four rectangular passages of which the exhaust circulates from x to x\ Before passing the throttle /?, extra air is ■admitted by a double-seated balanced valve a1, the stem of which is held by a leather diaphragm g forming part ■of the dash-pot t ; the under side of the diaphragm is open to the atmosphere, and the top to the mixing chamber, and by this means varying depressions caused by corresponding degrees of throttle opening, act upon a large area, and thus cause the valve a1 to lift over a wide range, the method here adopted being in principle the same as shown in Figs. 23 and 32. A good point in this vaporizer is the adoption of an adjustable fuel feed by a pin valve n, connected up by a pinion and sector with a lever for hånd control, this being especially useful, if not necessary, during the procedure of changing-over from petrol to paraffin; another, is the facility for removing the yaporizing tubes v, and thirdly, the general compactness of this easily detachable fitment, for which reason, and to its well-considered automatic control, it would seem to be equally applicable to the variable running conditions of a road-car.
