30 OUR ROADWAYS. nothing would be wasted; refuse, whether liquid or dry, could be swept off the water-tight surface, and rapidly removed, the whole fetching a price which would at least approximate to the cost of its removal. Need would no longer exist for finding shoots on waste land for the deposit of useless rubbish, con- sisting of a large proportion of comminuted granite rendering useless the trace of manure mixed with it. The saving in this respect would be very large, and were wood more generally employed as a pavement, would be much greater, for no small proportion of the third of a load which is taken off a thousand yards of Wood Pavement has been conveyed thither from pavements of a less cleanly character. The comfort and convenience of Wood Paving need scarcely to be more than stated, but if any evidence of the truth of this statement were needed we have abundance, in the facts which are every day coming before us in the shape of memorials and deputations to Vestries and Boards praying that Wood Pavement may be laid down, while the residents in the localities have mostly supported their wishes by subscribing towards the cost, and have, in some cases, paid the whole expense of the improvement. In conclusion, then, we may say that Wood Pave- ment, when laid upon the best system, in the first place is safe, and affords a good foothold for horses; secondly, there is good reason to predict that it will be found durable; thirdly, it is essentially a cleanly
