This system was found to answer admirably on the great country roads, and on some was carried out with such regularity, that the driver of a London mail coach was wont to take a pride in running one wheel of his coach accurately on the edge of the broken stones freshly laid along the road. Such regular driving was, however, utterly unattain- able in the streets of a large city, and of late years steam rollers have been employed to flatten down the fresh metal of the roadways.
