(b) The Asphaltic Wood Pavement can be laid with rapidity, and repairs to sewers or gas pipes are effected with facility, without in any way injuring or weakening the original foundation. (c) Owing to its general solidity and strength of foundation, this pavement will be found to require less frequent renewals than other systems, thus se- curing a smaller amount of obstruction to the public traffic. (d) Hitherto a great objection brought against wood pavements has been the difficulty experienced in preventing the surface water from entering the joints, accelerating the decay both of the founda- tion and of the blocks. By the use of asphalte this difficulty has been thoroughly overcome, and the Asphaltic Wood Pavement is completely imper- vious to water. (e) The Asphaltic Wood Pavement requires no parting strips, which work to the surface and force out the interstitial filling—no useless contact of wood with wood to retain moisture and promote decay; hence its superiority in point of endurance.
