“ The present estimates are based on prices fur-
“ nished by the ‘Asphaltic Wood Pavement Com-
“ ‘ pany,’ that being, in my opinion, an improvement
“ on the existing pavement as laid down by the
“ ‘Improved Wood Pavement Company,’ the prin-
“ cipal advantage being its imperviousness to water;
“ and I recommend, if this system be adopted, that
“ the concrete foundation should not be less than
“ six inches deep, and that the wood blocks should
“ not be more than three inches in width.”
Mr. George J. Cox, late Surveyor to the Vestry
of St. Luke’s, Middlesex, having examined into the
systems of
The Improved Wood Pavement,
Mr. Stephen Carey’s Wood Pavement,
Messrs. Mowlem and Co.’s Wood Pavement,
The Ligno-Mineral Wood Pavement, and
The Asphaltic Wood Pavement,
and, after having dealt with the absolute necessity
of having a good and permanent foundation, con-
cludes his report with the following remarks :—
“ The Asphaltic Wood Pavement has this great
“ advantage, with the addition of an asphalte layer
“ or bed spread over the concrete, and joints of the
“ same material: this certainly seems a great im-
“ provement upon all other systems in consequence
4 4 of its imperviousness to water, which would preserve
“ the foundation of the road sound and intact.
