FOREWORD
THE position of Denmark in agriculture and ship-
ping is at present a matter of particular interest
to the United States as well as to the countries of
Europe. The urgent demand for foodstuffs from the
nations which have been impoverished by the war
and whose territory has been devastated by military
operations must, until they can resume production, be
supplied by the countries which have been more fortu-
nate. Denmark’s contribution to the total amount
of the world’s export of food was normally of much
importance. The Great War, however, was far-reaching
in its effects and, together with a large increase in the
commercial activity of the nation, brought serious
difficulty to its agricultural industry. In the present
international situation, the progress which Denmark
has made toward normal food production since the
signing of the armistice and the position which her
shipping has maintained in supplying at least a part
of the demand for ocean tonnage are of unusual
significance. The following study on this subject
has been prepared by our Statistical Department.
