________________ ______ _____________________________________________________________________ ... _______________ ____________ _______ ______ 21 Geimany is the chief buyer, the proximity of this market making it possible without difficulty to export the fish in a fresh condition, and the Danish State Railways have supported the endeavours made in this respect by running trains with refrigerating chambers between Den- mark and certain German towns. England, too, is an important purchaser of fish from Denmark, especially plaice, and live eels. The transport via Esbjerg to London usually takes 36 hours; when carefully packed the killed fish remains quite fresh and palatable. As a rule there is communication with London tour times a week, with Grimsby twice a week and Newcastle once a week. The ships are fitted with refrigerating chambers. The fishery and export from the Faroe Islands and Iceland are not included in the above statement. The export of fish and fish products from the Faroe Islands will, in the aggregate, amount to a couple of million Kr. and from Iceland to abt. 10 to 12 mill. Kr. The chief product is split cod which is principally exported to Spain, Italy, Belgium und Germany; besides this some salted herrings are exported. The interests of the Danish fish exporters to the English markets are entrusted to Captain A. Soiling, Fishery Commissioner, 4, Firs Avenue, Muswell Hill, London N. The value of the fresh-water fisheries is estimated at abt. 1,000,000 Kr. annually. A rather extensive pisciculture in ponds has of late been carried on for the purpose of hatching and rearing fry. From the hatching beds some fecundated roe, especially trout roe, is exported. The value of the export of fresh-water fish and that reared in ponds, which almost entirely goes to Germany, is estimated at 750,000 Kr.
