Let all motorists, therefore, commence from now to practise the proper grip for the starting handle. The writer would exhort all his readers specifically to train them- selves out of the ordinary bad habit, and see if they cannot very quickly acquire the correct method for gripping the starting handle. How to Grip a Starting Handle Be it known then by these presents that the right way to grip the starting handle is as follows :— Instead of surrounding the handle on the off side by the fingers, with the thumb on the left (the ordinary and instinctive grip), move the thumb over to the same side of the starting handle as the fingers. The grip is thus between the ball of the thumb and the fingers, the thumb itself not being of any specific value for the purpose of gripping the handle. One has to admit that the grip, as described, is neither so natural nor so easy—at any rate, just at first ; but, on the other hand, if one makes a point of 22
