Second Floor. Art Galleries. South Saloon. 151 No. 10.—London Technical Exhibit.—This Exhibit is arranged by Mr. C. T. Millis, Principal of the Borough Polytechnic Institute. It is typical, as far as possible, of the Evening Technical Students’ work done in London. Most of the Exhibit is from the Borough Polytechnic Institute and its Branch (Herold’s Institute) at Bermondsey. Some of the subjects in which work is exhibited are peculiar to the Borough Polytechnic, as, for example, the subjects (Leather Tanning, Dyeing and Finishing) taught at its Herold’s Institute Branch. The Principal of the Northampton Institute, Clerkenwell (Dr. R. M. Walmsley), sends work which is mainly special to that Institute. A few of the articles of Section 1 are not Evening Work, but are by boys of the Borough Polytechnic Technical Day School. Sections — (1) Engineers’ Work, (2) Metal Plate Work, (3) Plumbers’ Work, (4) Carpentry, (5) Wheelwrights’ Work, (6) Bookbinding, (7) Letter- press Printing, (8) Boot and Shoe Work, (9) Chemistry, (10) Oils and Fats, Soaps and Candles, (11) Painters’ Oils, Colours, and Varnishes, (12) Bakery and Confectionery, (13) Leathers (work of Herold’s Institute, Bermondsey), (14) Silversmiths’ and other work (from Northampton Institute, Clerkenwell). The whole of the work exhibited is executed, under the superintendence of teachers who are specialists in their subjects. The Teacher of Borough Polytechnic Institute Class of “Painters’ Oils, Colours, and Varnishes,” Mr. C. Harrison, is practically engaged in that business. The Teacher of tho Class in “Oils and Fats, Soaps and Candles,” Mr. J. Wilton, is a Chemist in Soap Works. Bakery and Confectionery, “National School,” is a Special Department of Borough Polytechnic work. The School is supported by the National Association of Master Bakers and Confectioners, the London Master Bakers Protection Society, and the Scottish Association of Master Bakers, these bodies subscribing annually up to £500. The manage- ment is by the Governing Body of the Borough Polytechnic through an Advisory Committee appointed by the National Association. The Head of the School and Teacher in Confectionery is Mr. C. Norwak; the Teacher in Bakery is Mr. G. H, Vass. The work of Herold’s Institute is under the direction of Dr. J. Gordon Parker and Mr. M. Chas. Lamb, F.C.S., who, besides being chemists, are pi’actically trained in Leather-Tanning, Dyeing, and Finishiiag.
