diameter being placed vertically ; it must show a deflection
of 17 pei- cent, of the original diameter after two or three
blows, the height of fall being 10 metres (32 ft. 9 in.).
Chimney.—A wrought-iron chimney 50 metres (164 ft.)
high, and 1.800 metres (5 ft. 11 in.) in diameter at top, is
common to the boilers and to the annéaling furnaces.
This chimney was brought on the spot in three pieces,

The delivery wharf of the tyre shop is level with the
wagon platforms. The annual output varies from 12,000
to 15,000 tons according to the types manufacturée!. All
the material and plant have been designed and built at
Creusot.
which were then riveted together; and lifted into place
whole. The chimney weighs 36 tons, and is fixed to its
foundation by means of sixteen bolts 46 millimétrés (lif in.)
diameter. This type of chimney is largely used at Creusot ;
the method of its érection is illustrated by Fig. 134.
