MESSRS. SCHNEIDER AND CO.’S WORKS.
ductions of some photographs of tested plates are given in
Figs. 165 to 181, Plates XXXIV., XXXV., and XXXVI.
Apart from two (Figs. 168 and 174) which have undergone
expei’imental trials, carried oui by Messrs. Schneider and
Co. at their Villedieu proving-yard, ail these plates were
tested officially, and for this purpose had been chosen by
inspecting officers, from the lots they represented and after
the completion of each lot. Il is to be noted that inspect-
ing officers choose generally, for firing tests, those plates
which show surface imperfections, or those concerning
which doubts may have arisen during manufacture, either
owing to some accident, or from the results shown by some
of the testing operations of the materials, during the
varions processes of fabrication. Some particulars of the
plates illustrated are given in the Table on previous page.
Appended is a list of the tonnage of steel armour-plates
manufacturée! by Messrs. Schneider and Co. from 1876 till
May 1, 1898. Tons. Tons.
