IL—LOCOMOTIVES.
Messrs. Schneider and Co. have built 2,684 locomotives
since they commenced this brandi of engineering in 1838.
Figs. 289 to 313, Plates LXI. to LXVIL, are diagrams
of some of the principal types, and to eacli figure
the leading dimensions are appended ; they form inter-
in Fig. 283, and Figs. 284, 285, Plate LIX. ; Figs. 286,
287, Plate LX. ; and Fig. 288, page 109, are general
and detailed views of an express passenger locomotive
constructed at Creusot for the State Railways of France.
The illustrations are so complété that only a short
description will suffice. The engine lias four coupled
wheels and a four-wheeled front truck ; the cylinders
are placed outside the deep plate frames which are
extended well forward of the truck, and bevelled at
the end to receive the sharp bow-plate covering of the
smokebox door, a device introcluced to reduce tlio air
résistance when running at high speeds. With the same
object, the front of the drivers cab is finished with a
pointed curve, as will be seen by reference to the general
elevation, Fig. 283. The construction of the truck is

clearly shown in the plan, and longitudinal and transverse
sections ; it is so arrangée! that the centre pin on which it
turns allows a lateral movement on each side of the centre
line of 1 in., the motion being controlled by plate springs
(see Figs. 285 and 288). The boiler and outside firebox shell
are of extra mild steel plates, and the tubes are of steel on
the Serve system. The firebox and the front tube-plate
are of copper. The firebox is of the Belpaire type, and is
placed between the driving wheels, so that a considérable
depth is available ; it is fitted with a brick arch, and the
details of the drop-bars in front are shown in Figs. 284
and 287. The niethod of staying the firebox is illustrated
by Figs. 284 and 287 ; the firebox stays are of copper. The
boiler is fitted with three safety valves, two of which are
on the dôme, and the third over the firebox. The boiler is
fed by two 9.5 millimétrés Friedmann injectors placed at
the back of the firebox, as will be seen from b ig. 286. lhe
