“ Alexander III.” bridge, over the Seine, in Paris, one
of the monumental features of the 1900 exhibition.
The building section has delivered a large quantity
of frame work for mines, trusses for works and factories,
the most remarkable being the Creusot rolling - mili
building; the Forges and Chantiers boiler shops at
Mouisséques ; the coal-sorting and washing sheds for the
Montceau mines, near Creusot ; and lastly, the railway
station at Santiago (Chili), consisting of a truss without
tension-rods, of 50 metres (164 ft.) spån, and 25 metres
(82 ft.) high.
The Public Works section has constructed a large number
of caissons for compressée! air foundations, notably in
1893, those for the Borcea bridge above-mentioned, which
were sunk 31 metres (114 ft.) deep; in 1897, those for the
Tonkin bridges, which were sunk to depths varying from
12 to 24 metres (39 ft. to 78 ft.) ; those for the Hué bridge
(1898), &c. There have also been delivered from this
section, huils for tug-boats, slush-boats, a huil for a twin-
ment(1887); a tug-boat for the Blanzy coal mines; two
steam water-boats, “ Oasis ” and “ Filtre ” (1886) ; a double-
berthed floating dock for docking torpedo-boats in Toulon
Harbour (1888) ; a floating dock gate for Toulon (1888) ;
14 towing barges, and four tugs of 1,000 horse-power for
the Rhône Navigation Company; transportable lighters
for the Madagascar campaign, and numerous other classes
of work.
Abstract of Shipbuilding Work in Hand.—Messrs.
Schneider and Co. have now (1899) on their slips, and in
course of completion :—
Nine first-class torpedo-boats, 37.500 metres (123 ft. | in.)
in length, of 24 knots speed, for the French Navy.
Six hoisting torpedo-boats, 18.200 metres (50 ft. 8| in.)
in length, of 18 knots speed, for the French Navy.
Two screw slush boats, 43.900 metres (144 ft.) in
length, of 900 tons displacement, for the Russian Govern-
ment.
Two paddle tugboats, 60 metres (196 ft. 10 in.) in

screw dredger of 400 horse-power for Rochefort Harbour,
the huils for three suction-dredgers of 250 cubic metres
<8,830 cubic feet), and for two slush carriers of 350 cubic
metres (10,595 cubic feet) for Russia, &c.

Besides the torpedo-boats above-mentioned, the marine
section has delivered a large number of other work, such
■as 50 and 16-ton floating shears for the French Govern-
length, of 1000 horse-power, for the Rhône service above
mentioned.
One floating dock gate, of galvanised steel, for the
Saigon graving dock.
Two floating dock gates, of galvanised steel, for the
Missiessy Docks, Toulon.
Two inilitary masts for the battie,ship “lena.”
One backing of the Gueydon type for firing experi-
ments for Lorient Harbour.
The most important Works at Clialon are tbose of
Messrs. Schneider and Co. They are exceptionally well
situated, as regards the transport of raw material and
finished products. Placée! as they are at the junetion of
the Saone and the Canal du Centre, tliey are within easy
reach by water of Havre and Marseilles. They are served,
moreover, by a siding line of the Paris, Lyons and Medi-
terranean Railway.
