The temperature in the kiln can be raised to 2,732 deg. Fahr. ; notwithstanding this it requires but very little repair. It is built of sand bricks outside, and fire bricks inside. The gas generators, hoppers, valves, and general mechanism, are of the simplest kind. Raw Material and Products. -The raw material used consiste of aluminous, silicious, and porcelain clay, quartz, bauxite, ores, carbonate of lime, &c. Nearly al] this material cornes from the Department of Saône et Loire, or from other departments bordering upon it. The silicious and porcelain clay is either stored in the open or under cover, where it remains as long as possible in order to increase its plasticity. The aluminous clay is kept in blocks under cover, so as to dry before being roasted, in order to drive out the remaining water. It is afterwards used as a mixture with softer clay. At these works are manufacturée! refractory products of all kinds and shapes for metallurgical purposes ; foundries ; gas works ; stove manufacture, &c. The chief products may be classified as follows, according to the varions uses to which they are put : 21 A. Quality.—For puddling furnaces ; re-heating fur- naces, coke ovens ; boiler bricks. B. Quality. — For tuyeres ; valve seats ; ladies for Bessemer and Siemens-Martin steel. C. Quality.—Cupola bricks, which have to withstancl sudden and great variations in temperature. D. Quality.—For the varions parts of blast-furnaces ; pièces for steel casting moulds ; varions parts of foundry cupolas ; supports inside re-heating furnaces ; coke ovens, heatino- stoves. O Silicious Quality.—For the construction of Siemens- Martin furnaces. Bauxite Quality.-—Aluminous isolating bricks for basic Siemens-Martin furnaces ; flame bridges for puddling and re-heating furnaces. Ore Quality.—For inside lining of rotary puddling furnaces.
