XL VIII.—SIEGE AND GARRISON GUNS. rpHE Schneicler-Canet guns for the attack and defence J- of garrisons comprise the whole series of types and calibres in use for this special service. In this dass may be numbered also the guns which have been désignée! during the last few years, to serve for garrison and fiele! duty. The latter are especially of the mortar and howitzer kind, ranoine- in calibre from 90 millimétrés to 15 centimètres (3.543 to 5.905 in.), and their carriages are so arranged that they allow firing on ordinary ground, without preparing a suitable platform beforehand. They French Government, and lias also been supplied to the Russian and Danish War Departments. SIEGE GUNS. A description of the complété series of guns of this dass manufacturée! by Messrs. Schneider and Co. would be a too lengthy one, and as the general arrangements vary but little from one calibre to another, the types which have been made in the greatest numbers at Messrs. Schneider and Co.’s Creusot Works—those of 12 centi- Fig. 993. 12-Centimetre Schneider-Canet Siege Gun. answer the programme recently laid clown by varions governments, the object of which is to constitute (besicles the normal armament in field artillery) batteries easily shifted, and formée! of large calibre guns, quickly set, for firing with high trajectories. This materiel embodies all the Schneider-Canet improvements, and a certain number of examples are also provided with the devices that enter into the construction of quick-firing guns. In this section, the Peigné-Scbneider-Canet system of transportable batteries will also be passée! in review ; these have been designed for all siege operations, whether for attack or for defence, and also for coast service. This matériel is of interest, owing to the important services it will be callecl upon to fulfil ; it has been adoptée! by the metres and 155 millimétrés (4.724 and 6.102-in.) calibre —will only be reviewed. 12-Centimetre (4.724-In.)
