The air recuperator is independent of the recoil cylinder, and is formed of an outside cylinder in one piece with the cradle, and one containing an inside piston, the rod of which is jointed to the shoulder-piece already referred to. When firing takes place, the compressée! air which is in the inside cylinder, and in the space between the two cylinders, is forced into the latter space ; as soon as recoil is spent a reaction of the air takes place, and the piston works forward. The carriage is in two parts, the carriage proper which gears in a curved rack fixed under the cradle on the centre line of the carriage. The wheels and axle are designed for a track of 800 millimétrés (31.496 in.) on the tread ; the wheels are 700 millimétrés (27.559 in.) in diameter, the nave is of brass, and the rim of bent wood, in three pieces. The spokes are joined to the rim by means of steel sockets. The sighting device contains a scale fitted to the cradle: it does not inove, therefore, when the howitzer recoils, and Fig. 998. 15-Centimetre Mortar. Fig. 999. 90-Millimetre Mountain Howitzer. and the trail ; they consist of two brackets of wrought steel plates, joined together by top and bottom trail-plates and by stay-plates. The two parts are quickly joined together by means of damps and pins. The end of the trail is fitted with a rigid spade, similar to that of quick- firing field guns. The nose-plate is arrangée! for booking on the fore-limber, by means of a pivot-bolt of the usual shape, or for direct hauling, two rings being also provided for holding the shaft. The elevating mechanism is set in motion by a crank placed on the left side of the carriage ; it works a pinion is arranged for laying the gun direct from 0 deg. to 60 deg.
