XLIX.—LAND TURRETS. Ä LARGE number of chilled cast-iron turrets, armoured caponiers, disappearing armoured turrets, transport- able cupolas for machine guns, &c., have been built by Messrs. Schneider and Co. for the French and varions other governments. These cannot all be described in detail ; the following descriptions of a few examples will, however, give an idea of the aetivity displayed by the firm in this dass of work. gun is trained laterally by the gunner, who bears agamst the butt end ; he is thus enabled to fire rapidly against troops. To set the gun in place, the frame is first mounted on the trunnions ; the gun and frame are then let into the embrasure and the vertical pivots are placed in their sockets, one above and the other below ; the pivots are fitted with a ring that holds them to lugs cast on the cast- is I Figs. 1004 to 1006. Quick-firing Gun (Figs. 1004 to 1006).—This consists simply of a plate which forms both a shield and a support for the gun, the latter being fixed to the mounting. Eleva- tion ranges from — 5 deg. to + 10 deg., tlie gun being made to turn on its trunnions in a frame. The gun can be trained laterally over 10 deg. each side, by causing the frame to turn on vertical pivots. The frame is in two parts, bolted together; it is made with two holes in a vertical line with the trunnions; the vertical pivots fit in these holes. The plate that closes the casemate embrasure is strongly fitted in the wall by means of eight armour-plate bolts. This plate is of cast steel. The steel plate. This arrangement adds strength to the system ; it resists the shock caused by firing mach belter than the stay and lower pivot in general use for this kind of fortification work, while it allows of a suitable range to follow the target aimed at without difficulty.
