POWDERS AND OTHER EXPLOSIVES.
All the powders supplied by Messrs. Schneider and Co.
are manufacturée! in the French Government Powder
Factories, under the direct supervision of the French
Government Engineers. This is in accordance with the
Foreign Governments, however, continue the use of varions
types of powder, either for the sake of economy or to
maintain uniformity in their stocks of ammunition. The
manufacturers of war material are consequently obliged
still to provide for two distinct kinds of explosives,

Examples of Powders and Smokeless Explosives.
Law of 1883, which régulâtes the manufacture and
the sale of explosives in France. These powders fulfil all
the conditions stipulated by the French Admiralty for the
powders used in the French Navy. Their qualities and
characteristics are therefore accurately known. As a
rule, all the Schneider-Canet guns are now fired with
ammunition préparée! with smokeless explosives. Several
each including varions grades, to suit both the calibre and
the dass of ordnance.
Black or Brown Powders.—Leaving aside a certain
number of qualities of powder, the manufacture of which
is gradually ceasing, we inay mention tliat the black and
brown powders now used with the Schneider-Canet field,
