340 MESSES. SCHNEIDER AND CO.’S WORKS. volts. The armature is serrated and doubled, each being independent of the other, and connected to a commutator on each side of the armature. The current is collected by carbon bruskes, which can be regulated simultaneously, or independently. As the armature windings can be placed in parallel or in tension, a current of 3000 amperes at 110 volts, or 1500 amperes and 220 volts, can be delivered at pleasure. The inductor, which has twelve poles, is of cast steel ; it will be noticed that much care has been taken with the design to ensure rigidity. There are four generators, of the type shown in Fig. 1098. This is the Schneider Company’s S pattern. The principle features of this type are the very large commutators ; the design is well considered throughout. Steam is provided from 20 Niclausse boilers distributed in four groupa, two forward of the engine and two aft. The total weight of machinery and boilers for the “Kléber,” is 1275 tons, of which the engines account for 663 tons, and the boilers (filled with water) the re- mainder. STEEL INGOTS. A number of steel ingots were shown in the Pavillon, and a wooden model of the largest yet cast at Creusot, and Fig. 1100. 150-Ton Steel Ingot. ENGINES OF THE FRENCH WARSHIP “KLÉBER.” I which is reproduced in Fig, 1100. Particulars of the series are as follows : One of the three sets of the engines for the Frencb warship “ Kléber” was shown in the Pavilion ; each set of engines drives an independent screw. As will be seen 1. An ingot of Martin steel that had been compressed in the Creusot 10,000 ton press. The weight of this ingot is 29 tons ; it is about 40 in. in diameter at the base, 36 in. from Fig. 1099, Plate CLXXVII., the engines have three j in diameter at the top, and 16 ft. 4 in. long. The ingot is vertical cylinders, and are triple-expansion. The valves of ' intended for gun manufacture ; the pressure to which the cylinders are cylindrical; the high-pressure cylinder has j it was subjected during 2 hours 30 minutes was about one valve ; the intermediate, two ; and the low-pressure, 4500 Ib per square inch ; under this pressure the length four valves. Facsimile of an ingot in wood, copper coated, so I as to reproduce the exact surface of the original casting ; ! the ingot is square at base and summit, the measurements being respectively, 7 ft. 2.61 in. and 6 ft. 6.74 in ; the I height of the lower part is 13 ft. 1.50, and of the upper
