of the island.
On the Swedish coast, Falsterbo, Trelleborg, Smygehuk, Ystad,
Sandhammaren, Simrisliamn and Ähus may be named as the places
that are the most thickly dotted with the marks of destruction,
but also this coast as well as that of Bornholm is, as appears from
the Chart, well provided witli lights and lifeboat stations.
For further explanation of some of the facts, contained in
the present paper, I subjoin a few statistical tables, showing the
number of the strandings witli regard to time and place.

It appears from the above table that on the coasts in question
6316 strandings of sailing vessels and steam ships have occurred
during the twenty-eight years ending 31st December 1885. Tire
annual average is 226 strandings, or, the whole period making 10227
days, 6/10 th of a stranding a day.
Tlie lowest number of strandings (154) occurred in 1870, and
the highest number (423) in 1872, which was principally due to
