As a complete and official Register of the number of vessels
which yearly pass round the Scaw, through the Belts and the Sound
has not been at my disposal, and there is a decided want of
sufficient data, such as tonnage, nature, build and age ot
the vessels; nature and value of the cargoes; trades in whicli
the casualties happened; reliable reports of all the averages
whicli in the course of the period in question have occurred througli
collisions; accidents to machinery, such as breakdowns, explosions; etc.
it could not be my intention by the following remarks to give a
full and detailed statement of tlie results of our average statistics, but
I merelv wish to point out some of the most important facts derived
from the abstracts, whicli will appear from a complete list ot the
strandings occurred in the Danish waters during a period of twenty-
eight years, commencing tlie 1st January 1858, ending 31st December
1885, and compiled from official sources.
For tlie present examination, tlie whole ot the coast line lias
been divided in four geograpliical principal districts, viz.
1. The west coast of Jutland (Jylland).
2. The coasts of tlie Kattegat, i. e. tlie sea, limited by tlie
east coast of Jutland between the Scaw (Skagen) and Ha-
