as to make this movement the world’s greatest agency
for universal peace.
Social Economy
THE world-wide interest in sociological problems,
many of which, owe their origin to modern eco-
nomic and industrial developments and. to the
marvelously rapid growth of urban centers, together
with, the progress made toward, their solution by the
application of scientific method, fully justifies the promi-
nence which will be accorded to social economy at the
Panama-Pacific International Exposition.
The aim will be to illustrate the world’s progress in
the entire field of social endeavor, to show man in all
his complex relations and activities, particularly from
the aspect of cooperative association. This would in-
clude consideration of all the manifold forms of govern-
mental and social control, mutual association for the
betterment of living conditions, and in general all move-
ments for the development of a fuller social life. The
comprehensive scope is further indicated by the classifi-
cation, although it is obviously impossible, in any Classi-
fication, to give individual recognition to each particular
topic, however important it may be.
This brief outline will leave no doubt as to the enor-
mous benefits derivable from an exhibit dealing with
the most vital problems of our existence. The great en-
gineering achievement — the Panama Canal—in honor
of which this Exposition is held, would indeed have
