the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce has encouraged the organization of a
Business Men’s Party consisting of representative men from the various industries
in China. This party is to visit the United States during the time of the Exposition
for tlæ purpose of investigation and of further strengthening the friendly tie which
binds the two great republics together.
The pictures forming the body of this booklet are collected for the purpose
of giving a general idea of some phases of China’s new industries. In glancing
through its pages one must bear in mind that the new industry in China is still
in its infancy and that when it is compared with the great industrial world, it is
like a little stream to the vast ocean or a small hill to the greatest of the
mountains. This state of affairs is partly to be explained by the fact that
since the establishment of the Republic, conditions in China have not been most
favourable for the rapid growth of industrial enterprises. However, a good begin-
ning lias already been made, and as most great enterprises begin in a small way,
there is good reason to expect that before long we may witness great strides made
in the commercial and industrial life of modern China. It is to be hoped that the
Chinese Business Men’s Party now visiting America, after having received all the
inspiration and the lessons that come through observation and travel, will, upon
their return, bring a new impetus not only to the development of China’s industry
but also to that of commerce and trade between China and the United States of
America. Chang Chien.
Minister of Agriculture and Commerce.
