Metrical System.
The English standard yard being of bronze at 62° Fahr.,
whilst the French standard metre is of platinum at 0° C.,
the Standards Commission in the Report of 1871-72 considered
a correction needed for scientific purposes to allow for this
difference. In the Weights and Meastffés Act of 1878, how-
ever, the original equivalents as determined by Kater were
adopted without the proposed correction. A comparison of
the corrected and adopted equivalents is given below.
