tions, and further, that the weight that may be put on
each block is thus dispersed over an extended area.
Messrs. Mowlem and Co.'s method of laying wood
paving is to form a foundation of concrete, varying
in thickness according to the nature of the subsoil
and the traffic; then to pave with blocks of yellow-
deal, 3 in. wide and 6 or 7 in. deep; the joints,
which vary from ■$- to J in., are filled in with sand
and lias lime, and the surface is afterwards indu-
rated by strewing it with shingle.
IMPROVED WOOD PAVEMENT.
The Improved Wood Pavement is formed of two
layers of one-inch boards laid transversely and lon-
gitudinally on the old road foundation, which is
made up with sand or dry earth to the proper cur-
vature; on these boards wood blocks are placed,
