on a pin carried on a lever c, which can be rocked about its axis by the rotation of the
cam. Imagine the shaft A held stationary. It is plain that if the arm or lever c be
rocked, motion will be imparted to the shaft b through the wheel c. When the shaft a is
rotating the motion caused by the rocking arm or lever c is superposed upon the shaft b
and the cam is so cut as to compensate exactly for the shape of the tumbler. This
gear is built by Fraser & Chalmers.
If terminals are octagonal or more sided they approach nearer to the circle, and the
difference in speed is hardly perceptible.
The use of such equalising gears is recommended for chain-driven elevators and
conveyors with hexagonal terminals, but it is better to avoid having hexagonal pulleys
altogether and use those with not less than eight sides.
