THE WAREHOUSING OE GRAIN 677 being one of the first installations of silo granaries in this country. An excellent description of this warehouse was given by Mr William Shapton in a paper read before the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, from which the following account has been taken. The objects aimed at in designing this granary were : Firstly, the greatest storage capacity on a given area of ground; secondly, economy of construction ; thirdly, immunity from fire risk; fourthly, economy of labour in the several processes of discharging from the ships, receiving into the granary, turning over to keep the grain in marketable condition, bagging, weighing, and delivering into railway wagons or carts. Figs. 959 and 960. Dockside Receiving Elevators of the Alexandra Grain Warehouse. Building.—As shown in the plan, Fig. 957, the building stands at a considerable distance from the dock side. On three sides it has direct communication with the London and North-Western, the Lancashire and Yorkshire, and the Midland Railways, for the delivery of grain. The front is occupied by boilers, engines, and offices. The dimensions in plan are 240
