Siliceous bricks are made by the burning of siliceous clay, which is the
largest deposit of kieselguhr in Denmark. Deposits of siliceous clay are
mainly found in the island of Mors in Northern Jutland and on the adjoining
coasts of the Liim-Fiord. As far as is known, deposits to such an extent
are not to be found elsewhere in the world.
Abroad attempts have been made to make burnt stone of kieselguhr by
mixing it with clay, but it is difficult to produce a proper blend because kiesel-
guhr, as compared with clay, is a very light substance. Danish kieselguhr,
however, has been mixed with clay from nature’s hand, and the blending has
been very thoroughly done. When experiments made by the Institution for
Official Tests had proved that bricks only half as heavy as ordinary bricks,
but capable of enduring almost the same pressure, could be made from the
palest siliceous clay, the joint-stock company »Frederiksholms Tegl- og Kalk-
værker« began the manufacture of this kind of bricks on a large scale. It is
especially light partitions for dividing walls, and hollow bricks for the filling
up of the lower part of floor partitions made of reinforced concrete which
