will be further considerably enlarged, in addition to which it is contemplated
to dredge a channel for ships of deep draught from the Southern part of
the port to the deep waters in Kjøge Bugt (Kjøge Bay). The ports can be
entered from the sea direct to quay, so that it will only to a very small degree
be necessary for steamers to seek the assistance of tugs.
The water depth of the port of Copenhagen is up to 26.8 feel, in the
Free Port the water depth is up to 31.2 feet. The tide does not rise or fall
here. Pilots can be obtained at Helsingør (Elsinore) at the northern entrance
to the Sound, at Dragør at the southern entrance, and at the Middelgrund
Fori situated at the entrance to Copenhagen where a pilot steamer is
stationed Water, coal and provisions and all kinds of ship’s stores can
be obtained here in any quantity. Two of the largest shipbuilding yards
in the country are situated near the harbour, namely Burmeister & Wain,
Maskin- og Skibsbyggeri, Ltd. and Kjøbenhavns Flydedok, Ltd., and new
shipbuilding yards are in the course of construction. Floating docks for
ships of up to 11.500 tons are found here; the largest floating dock is 48)
feet long. In the road, well sheltered from al! winds, are good anchorages
in 5 fathoms of water. Storm and time signals are exhibited daily. A salvage
steamer (Svitzei Salvage Co.) is stationed heie.
The Free Port of Copenhagen
is situated outside the Danish customs boundaries in consequence of which
it is well suited for all kinds of transit trade. Kjøbenhavns Frihavns-Aktie-
selskab (Copenhagen Free Pori Co., Lid.) undertake any kind of work in
connection with the loading and discharging of ships, the handling and
storing of goods, their measuring and weighing and any other kind of control.
Loans can be obtained on goods stored in the sheds belonging to the Free
Port Co., as the company is allowed to issue Warehouse Warrants.
The water area of the Free Port comprises 33.4 ha and the land area
49.1 ha (see annexted plan). The depth in the various basins ranges from
24.6 feet to 31.2 feel. The facilities for shifting in this port are excellent.
The aggregate length of the quays exceeds 5000 meters.
The Free Port is equipped with sheds, graneries, and warehouses oi
every kind, with electric cranes and portable steam cranes for the discharge
of ships, grain-elevators etc. and the port is connected with the State railways.
Office and warehouse premises as also building sites can be leased, rhe
aggregate floor space of the warehouses and sheds comprises altogether
abt. 190.000 m2. In the Free Port Goods may be stored, handled and re-
