151 and through this 18 feet can be carried to the wharf in the new harbour. Water, coal and provisions can be obtained. Elsinore — see Helsingør. Esbjerg. Esbjerg is situated on the West coast of Jutland — behind, and naturally protected by the isle of Fanøe in Lat. 55° 28' N., Long. 8. 26 E. This is an artificial harbour, and, consisting partly of a dock basin arranged somewhat on the English pattern, and partly of an outside harbour protected by a breakwater, it differs somewhat from other Danish ports. The tide rises and falls about 5 feet. The entrance to this port should never be attempted without a pilot, and a pilot cutter is always, to be found stationed at »Graadyb«, except when prevented by ice, but in that case the cutter is replaced by a steamer carrying pilots. The harbour is, even during extremely severe winters, always navigable by steamers. Tugboats can be obtained at reasonable rates. The wharves are 5 to 6 feet above high water, and at high water there are 23 feet of water at the outside wharf, and in the dock basin*). Coal, provisions and water can, be obtained in any reasonable quantity. Small repairs can be executed by several machine shops. Railroad tracks on the wharves and a 15 and a 10 ton crane. The wharves are lighted by electricity. Time signal for correction of chronometers. Storm signals displayed. Brokers and forwarding agents. C: Breinholl (T. »Breinholl«). 1. Lauritzen (T. »Lauritzen«). Faaborg. Faaborg is situated on the South coast of the island of Fyen, in Lat. 55° 6' N.» Long. 10° 15' E. 20 feet of water can be taken into the harbour and alongside one of the wharves. The wharves are 4 to 6 feet above water. There is a tugboat and a machine shop for small repairs. Provisions, coal and water are plentiful. Railroad tracks on wharves. Broker. P. A. Nielsen. Forwarding agents. P. A. Nielsen. Carl Thrane. *) A new traffic-harbour will be built west of the town.
