35 Hø og Halm. — Hay and Straw. — Foin et paille. — Heu und Stroh. The export of hay and straw has at times been very large, but, as a matter of course, it is largely dependent on the result of the harvest. In 1913 the value of the hay and straw export amounted to % million Kroner. The goods are exported in machine-pressed bales and are chiefly sent to Germany and to countries overseas. With regard to hay it is especially timothy and clover in a mixed as well as an unmixed state, which are exported, furthermore, ordinary cock’s foot grass, Italian ryegrass and several mixtures. Of straw, the export comprises mainly wheat, rye, oat and barley straw in addition to rye straw, threshed with a flail and pressed the long way of the straw. The last mentioned article has been largely sold to England, where it is used in the saddlery trade and several other industries, whilst the Eng- lish farmers use this kind of straw for the thatching of their cornstacks.
