“Ulster,” 1896.—Steel Twin-screw Steamer, 2632 tons gross, with the sister ships,
“Leinster,” “Munster,” and “Connaught,” built by Laird Bros, for City of
Dublin S.P. Co’s Irish mail service between Holyhead and Kingston. Length
B.P. 360', breadth 4iy. depth 29’3'. Engines, triple expan., 4 cranks, S.C.
9000 H.P., four D.E. boilers, working pressure 175 lbs. Speed 23J knots.
“Clan MacDonald,” 1897.—Steel Screw Steamer of the now familiar “Turret” type,
4839 tons gross, 3113 nett., built by W. Doxford & Sons, Sunderland, for the

“Saxonia,” 1899.—Steel Twin-screw Steamer, 14,000 tons gross, built by J. Brown
& Co., Ltd, Clydebank for the Cunard Co.’s trade between Liverpool and
Boston. Length 580', breadth 64', depth 41|'. Engines, quad, expan. D.A. s.c.
of 9,500 H.P. Eight s E. boilers, working pressure 210 lbs. Speed 16| knots.
“Montezuma,” 1899.—Steel Twin screw Steamer, 7345 tons gross, built by
A. Stephen & Sons for Elder, Dempster & Co.’s Atlantic cattle trade. Length
overall 499', breadth mid. 58' 9", depth mid. 41|'. Engines, triplo expan. s.c.
of 4384 H.P. Three d.e. boilers, 180 lbs. working pressure. Speed 13 knots.
This admirable example of the modern cattle carrying vessel, has, from her
completion, been employed as Admiralty transport, conveying horses and mules
to South Africa.
