7 built a framework with a light constructed and placed in the manner described above. No tidegauge shall however be set up, and the light shall show a fixed red light outside the entrance to the harbour and a fixed green light inwards over the harbour; in other respects the light shall be placed in the same manner as the one at the Effersey-mole. Along the outer top-edge of the mole there is to be built a parapet of concrete. The concrete blocks for the parapet shall have a weight of at least 5 tons. The top of the mole shall be levelled with a layer of mortar in which the blocks shall be bedded, and they shall be compacted with cement-mortar : 1 cement 2 sand. After the compacting the wall shall be brushed with cement-mortar 1 : 2. The breadth of the wall is 1 m., its height 1,50 m. The edges shall be cut off so as to present a plane of 15 cm. The concrete employed shall be composed of 1 cement -|- 2 sand 4 shingles. Along the harbour side of the mole there is to be built the steamboat-pier described under 3. b. In case ot alternative tenders for molehaads with plumb walls being presented, it must be ob- served with regard to their placing, that the total length of the moles must in that case be 480 m. and 275 m. respectively. The platforms of the heads shall be 7 m. above low-water level, and shall be sur- rounded by* a strong 1,25 m. high parapet of concrete firmly compacted with the platform, made like the one described above. The above-described framework for the lighthouses will in that case be omitted, and the lighthouses will be placed on the platforms, but their construction will be the same as described above. The above-mentioned tidegauge is to be placed beside the head of the Effersey-mole. The mole- heads shall be placed in such a manner and have such a form and size that the slopes of the mole do not extend beyond them into the entrance to the harbour. A flight of steps, made of hewn quarry- stone, shall lead from the head down to the top of the mole. 2. Dredging The dredging embraces the excavation of the area shown on Plate I bounded by the two red lines, the retaining wall at the pier, and the 5 m. curve. This area is to be excavated to a depth of at least 5 m. below low-water level. As further dredging of the harbour inside the moles may possibly be desired before the com- pletion of the work, the persons tendering are requested to state in their tenders their charges for the excavation of each cubic metre beyond the extent stated above. 3. The steamboat-piers. The projected steamboat-piers are 2, viz: a) The pier at Hafnarstræti, b) The quay alongside the Batteri-mole. a) The pier at Hafnarstræti projects from a filled up space between Hafnarstræti and a line parallel with this street at a distance from it of 80 m. Along this line there is to be built a frontwall of bonded rubble. At the site of this frontwall the soft ground shall be dug away and be replaced by stone measuring from 5 cm. to 50 cm. upwards to 0,5 cm. below low-water level. On this foundation the wall is to be built; it shall be given a cross-section as exhibited on Plate II. The breadth is 1 m. at the top, and the front shall have a slope of 3 on 1. The level of the top shall be 6 m. above low- water. The outer top-edge shall be provided with a parapet of concrete, 1/i m. in breadth, and ’/« m. in height, the edges of which shall be rounded off. The space behind the wall shall be filled up with matter dredged up in the harbour or some other material, in such a way as to give the surface a uni- form slope from Hafnarstræti (the level of which is about .7 m. above low-water) to the front-wall; the space nearest the wall shall be filled up with stone measuring from 5 to 50 cm. The sides of this filling shall consist of rip-rap with a heart of small stone not exceeding 20 cm. in size. The slopes shall have a coating of stone measuring from 20 cm. to 80 cm. The space between the eastside of this filling and the stone-jetty for boats shall be filled up to a breadth of 5 m. The height of this filling shall be deter- mined by the height of the stone-jetty and that of the other filling. The breadth of the filling shall be 70 m. along Hafnarstræti, and 54 m. on the outer side (the frontwall). The pier projects from the middle of the frontwall. Its total breadth is to be 14,5 m. It is to be constructed as an open pile-bridge with 20 groups of piles 4 m. apart, each group consisting of six 31 Vs cm. piles clothed with iron-plates rammed down exactly in a line and at equal distances apart; the out- most group shall, however, only consist of 4 piles, the outmost pile on either side being omitted. Besides those 6 piles every other group shall be provided with two 29 cm. stay-piles clothed with iron plates, which shall be placed in the plane of the group and joined to the vertical piles by means of a wedge and 3 screw-bolts having a diameter of 30 mm. Each group of piles shall be strengthened by two pairs of horizontal ties of 101/« by 21 cm.; one pair shall have its upper surface in a level 0,9 m. above low- water, and the other shall be placed immediately below the longitudinal girders. Those ties are to be notched together with the piles so as to leave a space of 21 cm. between them. Between the two pairs of ties there is to be fastened a pair of cross-wise placed braces of 101/« by 21 cm., as exhibited on section abed Plate II. Besides that the two outmost piles on either side shall be provided with a pair of horizontal braces of 101/a by 21 cm. timber, which shall be notched into the outmost pile on either side so as to leave a space of 21 cm. between them. All those ties and braces shall be fastened to the piles with bolts having a diameter of 22 mm.
